Assistant chief of police, Anita Najiy, created a bone of contention between the Miami Police Department and the Fraternal Order of Police President, Javier Ortiz, after she refused to hold her hand over her heart for the Pledge of Allegiance during a recent promotional ceremony.
Ortiz became livid in seeing Najiy refuse to honor the Pledge, stating that she failed to exhibit courtesy and etiquette that “must be exercised when wearing a law enforcement uniform.”
“If you’re not pledging allegiance to the United States, my question is what country are you pledging allegiance to?” Ortiz asks. “Anyone who isn’t offended by that is not American, because when you become a U.S. citizen, you pledge allegiance to the US.”
Ortiz also states that Najiy’s disrepect comes from her Muslim belief, but that normal “protections” or exemptions generally given in the name of religious freedom and speech doesn´t apply to those in police uniform because “you’re supposed to be neutral.”
MOVE TO PAGE 2:

You know I think we’ve misunderstood each other and I apologize, I agree she don’t want to say under God her business she doesn’t have to. As long as everyone respects each other an no one harms each other then we should all be able to live together be able to agree to disagree!
Are you serious? Did you even read what I said. Please read it again because you totally missed my point.
What I said was there was a TRADITION of slavery and misoginy in this country. If someone at that time had used your same “if you don’t like the country leave” logic on people that objected to slavery..or people that thought women should have the right to vote…and those people left…then NOTHING WOULD HAVE CHANGE. Do you get my point now…
The fact that people that objected to slavery and thought women should vote didn’t leave…they stayed and fought AGAINST THE TRADITION is what changed it.
How exactly you thought I agree with Sharia Law and muslims is beyond me…..
Again…I am simply amazed that you think I want “the muslim way”…….considering I am an atheist and think all religion is equally harmful…..you couldn’t be further from the truth.
Like I said I misunderstood and I apologized, I do have a condition that causes me to misinterpret stuff an when I read the slavery I that it read you wanted slavery, so yes I mis read an misinterpreted an I apologize!
Not a problem…..I didn’t get your “misunderstood” reply until after I had replied again. These things happen….glad we finally found some common ground. Have a good night.
You again sorry
You too!
Melinda are you seriously suggesting that her ACTIONS of serving the community for 32 years is NOT as important as her standing at attention, facing the flag but choosing not to put her hand on her chest? Is that seriously how you prioritize her actions?
Daniel who exactly is telling you that you have to turn to their beliefs? You seem to think that muslims are all one big group that all agree on everything and are the boogie man coming to get you.
The christians from Westboro Baptist Church protest solidiers funerals….should I say that all christians protest soldiers funerals? No….because there are many different types of christians..just like there are many different types of muslims, jews, hindus, etc.
Yes you take an oath to serve and protect America….you are not forced to pledge allegiance to the flag (according to the Supreme Court and the 1st Amendment) and you certainly are not required to pledge allegiance to the christian god. So you were half right.
That is correct she serves this community and this nation period if she cannot stomach the flag she cannot nor will she serve the community with loyalty period
