Walmart has been installing facial recognition cameras at eye level in the entrances of their new store fronts for some time now. These cameras not only have the ability to cross reference you with social media networks to put a name with the face, but utilzes software that has the ability to ascertain a great many things about the environment. How much exactly is unknown, but in the video on the next page you can see that it not only tracks faces, but can categorize objects and motion.

If it helps them keep shoplifters that are banned from coming in…or aiding in arresting them….who cares. And as for privacy….I dont care if people know i shop at walmart.

I’ve sworn off shopping at Walmart. They’ve become everything I hate about large corporations.
this has been going on for years in casinos.
Walmart uses their cameras as a theft deterrent but they are primarily used for point of sale. Recently (last 5 years) many Walmart stores rearranged their products within the store. They put the highest selling products (electronics and junk food) in the back. That way you have to walk past a lot of stuff just to get what you want. Actually using the cameras to catch a petty shoplifter is rare. The camera they use are extremely low quality. They have opted to use cheaper cameras instead of more expensive IP cameras because they are cheaper to replace. If the detail was needed to use more for security, they would use a higher quality camera. Simple $#%&!@*og camera work fine for people tracking.
At whose eye level is the camera placed? If it is at the average person’s height, the camera will gaze upon the top of my head. Not much to recognize there. I therefore, should have no worries about invasion of my privacy.
Just another reason NOT to shop at Walmart.
I’m sorry, dave. I can’t do that
