Sexual Assaults Ruin Another German Festival

Last weekend, a folk festival in Schorndorf in Baden-Wurttemberg was disrupted by riots and a slew of sexual assaults committed by men police describe as “coming from migration backgrounds.”

Police arrested three 17-year old asylum seekers from Afghanistan on charges of sexually assaulting women at the festival. The night before, additional sexual attacks were reported at the festival, as well as nearby fields. According to media reports, an Iraqi man was identified as a suspect.

The violence ramped up on Sunday on the festival’s closing night when about 1,000 people gathered in the town’s center. Rioting broke out and the rioters went on a rampage. Police estimated that at least half of the rioters were migrants.

The riot is reported to have started after someone threw a glass bottle, but police say they have no idea who threw it. The initial incident led to people throwing glass bottles at the facade of the Schorndorf Castle and at the police.”

Even worse, there were reports of large gangs of young men roaming the town armed with knives.

One witness at the festival said the attacks were widespread saying, “I would say definitely more than half of the women who were at this show and stood toward the far front, were touched by these types.  I would say definitely, 30 women.”

Police acknowledge that alcohol may have played a role in the disruption and violence in Schorndorf. What would a German folk festival be without beer?

Police spokesman Ronald Krötz said, “the violence against the officials was frightening, ” and blamed the large consumption of alcohol for the violence. Police did arrest one German man but shortly released him after questioning. Authorities say the exact number of crimes committed over the weekend is still unknown.”

Unfortunately, these types of incidents are becoming more commonplace throughout Germany.

The worst episode, and first to garner serious media attention, happened in Cologne on New Year’s Eve 2015. Going into the new year, hundreds of German women complained of being accosted by migrants and sexually abused.

Last year in Bremen, a large port city, there were 24 cases of sexual assault during a multi-day cultural festival. Police blamed the incidents on five migrants from Afghanistan.

Several months later in Essen, more sex attacks occurred at a festival. Attendees said the assaults were similar to what happened in Cologne.

Music festivals have also become targets for radical Islamic terrorism as well, after a Syrian asylum seeker attempted to enter a festival in July of last year. The asylum seeker was denied entrance to the Bavarian event and instead chose to blow himself up near a restaurant killing himself and wounding a dozen others.”

The attacks have been spread around, from Bremen in the north of Germany to Cologne and Essen in the west, and Schorndorf in the south.

Folk festivals provide German cities and towns an opportunity to build a sense of community and celebrate a common heritage and culture. If citizens become wary of attending out of fear for their safety, the German way of life will continue to diminish and be destroyed.
