“I can’t imagine any use for bayonets in an urban setting,” stated Sen. Rand Paul to Senate Homeland Security Committee at a hearing last year.
“I can’t answer what a local police force would use a bayonet for,” Alan Estevez said.

Rand Paul is completely correct, of course, that there is no need for bayonets in local law enforcement. Bayonets are for hand-to-hand combat in battle and the only purpose is to kill.

Today’s military issue bayonets are the same size as a hunting knife, having a 7 inch blade, and knife like handle. They are not 2 foot long sword like devices that were in use during the revolutionary war. They are useful in crowd control situations, for cutting seat belts, cargo straps, breaking glass, cutting rope,as a prying tool, for cutting branches and an assortment of purposes that a knife fulfills. Its always a hoot to listen to and read the comments of the loons and morons not only in congress but in the general population where police use of military hardware is challenged. I want my police to be equipped with the same or better weapons and hardware that they are likely to face on the streets of America today. That means M-16’s and gas grenades, bayonets and armored cars. The idiots in shirts and ties that deny the police the military tools without them ever spending time in a blue or green uniform facing live fire and fire bombs are no better than the criminal class the police are up against daily. That includes Ron Raul.
