Petreaus to Form New Gun Control Group for Veterans

Unfortunately, even prominant military leaders are working with anti-gun activists, and a new gun control group was recently formed which includes General David Petraeus. He is joining with former astronaut Mark Kelly, married to Rep. Gabby Giffords, to take away the rights of veterans to own and bear arms. While Kelly is a fanatical anti-gun activitist who is guided primarily by his wife’s misfortune, Petraeus should show more respect for veterans and the Constitution. He has shown serious lapses in judgement before, so this may just be another chink in his persona.

The Veterans Coalition for Common Sense will push to strengthen gun background check laws and help prevent veterans from committing suicide. It pointed to several alarming statistics about the military and gun violence.

According to the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), about 22 veterans kill themselves each day.“As service members, each of us swore an oath to protect our Constitution and the homeland,” said Kelly, who formed another gun control group with his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.), after she was shot and seriously wounded during a mass shooting in 2011.

“Now we’re asking our leaders to do more to protect our rights and save lives,” Kelly added in the statement. “Gabby and I are grateful to all of these incredible veterans and leaders who are using their voice to call for commonsense change that makes our communities safer.”

In addition to Petraeus, the former CIA director, and Kelly, a number of other generals and admirals will join the group, including another former CIA director, Michael Hayden, and retired Adm. Thad Allen.

Giffords was shot by a mentally unstable man, and there is no question that more can be done to help those in our society who suffer with mental illness. The gun-control movement is simply using the mentally ill as a lever to attain their own objective, which is to disarm the public.

President Obama recently issued an executive order, which is his preferred way of going around the Congress, to pass a unilateral mandate to disarm veterans who may have problems managing their financial affairs. That also has nothing to do with owning or using a firearm, but with liberals, any excuse to take guns away from citizens is a good excuse.

Unless there is a dramatic change and push back from citizens and legislatures who care about the Constitution, we should expect to see a full confiscation of weapons from the public in the next 10 to 15 years. The effort is ongoing right now, it is incremental and piecemeal, but it is a real threat that must be stopped. And General Petraeus should be given a tongue lashing for joining with this band of fakes and liars.
