Jay Familglietti, NASA’s top water scientist, recently warned that California has only a year’s supply of water left in storage facilities and the backup groundwater is rapidly depleting. Despite this harrowing fact, California has no backup plan to address this crisis.
“California has no contingency plan for a persistent drought like this one (let alone a 20-plus-year mega-drought), except, apparently, staying in emergency mode and praying for rain,” stated Familglietti. “In short, we have no paddle to navigate this crisis.”
UPDATE: California Gov. Jerry Brown issues ineffectual, mandatory water restriction as one-third of our nation’s crops are threatened. See Page 3 for updates.

left coasters don’t get it. They coast through life like $#%&!@*oli then when they wake up they are shocked!
How come with all the water in the Pacific Ocean there are no sal$#%&!@*er desalination plants anywhere in calif?..they should have on line 20 years ago and the water problem wouldn’t be a serious problem today….
They’ll be heading to Oklahoma.
I don’t care they can spy on me all they want
God gave us our water and they let it go down the river for a smelt that lives 10,000 miles up and down the coast
That’s where it went people this crazy but true and every oil reg that pumps oil out 90 percent of its fresh water and they throw it in the ocean after they purify it
They gotta save the turtles!!
It will be interesting to see what California proposes to save itself. Maybe they can load their supertrain with garden hoses stretching to Washington and Oregon.
Their forebears headed to CA in old jalopies and ratty pickups from Kansas and Oklahoma to escape the dust bowl. Now they’ll be heading back in hybrids, private jets and sports cars.
I don’t mean to sound like a jerk – but apparently 1/3 of the country’s crops are there and it’s one of the most populated areas of the country. Large farms and large cities were placed in an area that never could sustain a large population nor industrial scale farming.
They’ve planted water intensive crops where they shouldn’t be any crops (for instance, those m$#%&!@*ive almond tree plantations – almonds require 1.2 gallons of water EACH to grow – that’s a lot of water for such a small thing). There are lush lawns where there shouldn’t be lawns.
The hell of it is – the city planners knew it when they planned the cities there.
