Jay Familglietti, NASA’s top water scientist, recently warned that California has only a year’s supply of water left in storage facilities and the backup groundwater is rapidly depleting. Despite this harrowing fact, California has no backup plan to address this crisis.
“California has no contingency plan for a persistent drought like this one (let alone a 20-plus-year mega-drought), except, apparently, staying in emergency mode and praying for rain,” stated Familglietti. “In short, we have no paddle to navigate this crisis.”

I am a general aviation pilot and fly over the Sierras quite often and have been (even before the drought) amazed at how many places there are to put damns and damns have never been placed there. If we were smart and would store a lot of water we have the potential to store. We would never have to worry about a drought. Instead put funds toward “the mating characteristics of a spotted owl. We should be putting our funds toward building damns” What’s wrong with California?
They don’t need a back up plan….. They will simply put the burden on the other states and take their water. I can see pipe lines and pumping stations from the Great Lakes being designed right now.
It may be their only answer but it has huge issues too. Desalinization takes a huge amount of energy but the big problem is the brine that is left over. They need to find something to do with it.

I thought Californians had their $#%&!@* together. Maybe they can make a movie and everything will be OK. The rich and illegals will get all the water they need.
