US Pacific Fleet Shrinks as China Grows

Decreases Harming U.S. Ability to Wage War

The decrease in vessels means that each ship must spend more time at sea in order to cover the areas that need to be patrolled.

One consequence of a smaller fleet has been more time at sea. Retired Adm. Zap Zlatoper, who commanded the Pacific Fleet in the 1990s, said deployments longer than six months made it harder for the Navy to retain sailors. Ships now deploy for an average of seven to nine months, though the Navy plans to lower this to seven.

Ship conditions have also suffered. The USS Essex left an exercise with Australia early in 2011 and skipped another with Thailand the following year because it developed mechanical problems after delaying maintenance to stay at sea.

Bryan Clark, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, a Washington think tank, said these are signs the status quo is unsustainable.

In a November report, Clark outlined alternatives: build more ships, though this would require money Congress may not give the Navy, or deploy less, though the Pentagon has been reluctant to accept less of an overseas presence.

The other choices: keep more ships at overseas bases where they would be closer to where they operate or mix up how ships deploy. One example would be to send fewer escorts with an aircraft carrier.

The problem goes well beyond the number of vessels, however.  The service is losing senior officers at an unprecedented rate, including 105 Navy admirals who have recently retired or are retiring in the near future. And Obama has completely eliminated the Tomahawk missile program, known as the most advanced cruise missile in the world, and will do away with the Hellfire missile program this year. The loss of both programs will seriously impinge on our ability to effectively defend ourselves and to support our allies.

Finally, the Heritage Foundation recently published a report showing that Obama has so weakened our armed forces as to make our ability to defend ourselves ‘marginal’ at best.

Obama has been hard at work tearing down our armed forces. Conflict around the world is at the highest level seen in recent memory, yet our Commander in Chief is stripping us of our capability to defend ourselves as a nation.

We have been warned by several top military commanders that his actions are highly criminal and treasonous and must be stopped, however, our military that has sworn to protect us from enemies foreign and domestic are doing nothing.

Obama suggested when he first ran for office that he would spend more time meeting with world leaders to decrease the conflicts and increase the peace and our ability to get along. In fact, the world is much more violent and dangerous than when he assumed office, with terrorism running rampant and nations such as China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea showing increasing bellicosity and willingness to engage militarily.

In the midst of these developments, Obama is shrinking the U.S. military and making it much less prepared to fight. It is hard not to label these activities as traitorous and absolutely contrary to our needs for safety and defense. Obama is anything but a loyal and effective commander in chief, and is destroying what was once the strongest military on earth.
