Did you ever notice how “happy faced” Kim Jong-Un and his military leaders always look in their staged photo-ops? The all look like they are having the times of their lives, like a bunch of kids at an amusement park. Of course, the whole thing is as fake as are Kim’s claims of prosperity, but as bad as things are in North Korea, if its dictator is stupid enough to pull the trigger, and his generals are stupid enough to follow his orders, the happy faces are not going to last for long. And neither is his nation.

As Secretary of State James Mattis held a press conference in South Korea with its acting prime minister, he could not have made his points more clear. The United States will defend its allies in the region. North Korea is a destabilizing and irresponsible force. Any attack by the North, especially one with nuclear weapons, will be met with an “overwhelming” response. In other words, North Korea will cease to exist.

The suffering that the people of North Korea have endured under the regime of Kim Jong-Un and those of his father and grand-father have been enormous. A nuclear war started by the current despot should be unthinkable. The hope is that the threats coming from the North are just that — hollow threats. But it is clear that neither President Trump nor Secretary Mattis are taking them lightly.

Let’s hope we don’t have to find out out serious Kim is. On the other hand, given his and his team’s success record in developing missiles, Kim Jong-Un might just blow himself and his country up before he is even able to launch another verbal attack, let alone a military one.

Here’s Mr. Mattis’ speech:
