President Obama seems to have upset some American Muslims in his Sunday speech from the Oval Office. Many others were left frustrated by his lack of strategy and initiative in fighting terrorist and ISIS, but the point that peeved Muslim Americans was his call to their community here and abroad to “confront extremism in their midst without excuse”.
Their objection to this statement is that they felt that they were being singled out, unfairly, among other religions. Yet, other religions are speaking out against the violence of radical Islam and calling on Muslim neighbors to join in the struggle against this extremist ideology.
Palestinian-American activist Linda Sarsour commented, “We would never ask any other faith community to stand up and condemn acts of violence committed by people within their groups,” and in this very statement she is wrong. When someone commits an atrocity in the name of their belief of faith, those who hold that faith rise up and condemn it.
