Say It Isn’t So: Obama Offends Muslims

Linda Sarsour, Palestinian-American activist, spoke out against Obama’s Oval Office speech on Sunday, frustrated that he would call on Muslim Americans here and abroad to “confront extremism in its midst, “without excuse.””  She, along with other Muslims feel as if they are being picked on, called out, where other religions are not.

“We would never ask any other faith community to stand up and condemn acts of violence committed by people within their groups,” said Palestinian-American activist Linda Sarsour, who has worked extensively with the Black Lives Matter movement and other minority groups. “The fact that this is only directed at the Muslim community is something that I personally can’t accept.”…

The thing is, she is wrong on this.  Other religious groups have taken the initiative and called out so called “believers” for actions they have taken that are nefarious.

An example would be when Westboro Baptist Church has picketed the funeral of slain soldiers, true Christian churches rise up and condemn their action.  Therefore, if Christians can call one another to the carpet and hold them blameworthy, certainly the Muslim community can decry and work to confront the extremism in their own faith.

Although Obama still could not bring himself to say “radical Islam,” he did note this about extremism:

That does not mean denying the fact that an extremist ideology has spread within some Muslim communities. This is a real problem that Muslims must confront, without excuse. Muslim leaders here and around the globe have to continue working with us to decisively and unequivocally reject the hateful ideology that groups like ISIL and al Qaeda promote; to speak out against not just acts of violence, but also those interpretations of Islam that are incompatible with the values of religious tolerance, mutual respect, and human dignity.

Why is it such an issue to condemn radical Islam for the Muslim community?  Does silence imply consent or is there a fear of punishment from those in their faith if they do stand against radical Islam?
