Obama Breaks with Tradition, Will Actively Oppose Trump

Mr. Obama can deal with the fact of Mr. Trump’s victory either with grace or by stomping his feet like a spoiled child.  So far, it looks like the latter will be the case.  He has already snubbed the Trumps by refusing the traditional photo of the outgoing and incoming first couples.  Trivial in one sense, but also a childish display by Mr. Obama, much like a temper tantrum.

Another tradition that Mr. Obama looks ready to break is that of allowing one’s successor to pursue his policies and agenda without injecting critical remarks into the media.  And given the political agenda of the mainstream media, it will be happy to broadcast and print anything Obama might say that is critical of Mr. Trump.

And though Obama said he wouldn’t get involved in every fight — including some fights likely to be about Trump and the Republican majorities in Congress ripping out his legacy — he very deliberately refused to say he’d hold to the tradition of presidents avoiding public comment or political attacks on their successors.

Mr. Obama then gets a bit more specific.

And though Obama said he wouldn’t get involved in every fight — including some fights likely to be about Trump and the Republican majorities in Congress ripping out his legacy — he very deliberately refused to say he’d hold to the tradition of presidents avoiding public comment or political attacks on their successors.

“I want to be respectful of the office and give the president-elect an opportunity to put forward his platform and his arguments without somebody popping off in every instance,” Obama said, but “as an American citizen who cares deeply about our country, if there are issues that have less to do with the specifics of some legislative proposal or battle but go to core questions about our values and our ideals, and if I think that it’s necessary or helpful for me to defend those ideals, then I’ll examine it when it comes.”

Translated into plain English:  To heck with tradition.  Obama is not only planning to go after Trump at every opportunity, but he is eager to lead his fellow Democrats in that effort.

Looking for a bright spot, given the job he’s done leading the Democrats these past eight years, perhaps Mr. Trump has less to worry about than one might imagine.
