Did you know that there is a “1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act?” Probably not, but then when one considers the volume of legislation created just at the federal level — legislation that remains in force, the normal reaction would be one of astonishment, of being utterly overwhelmed, of one’s eyes just glazing over. No wonder congressmen and senators have no idea what they’re voting on much of the time.
Anyway, apparently we have a crisis of excess horses and burrows running wild in western states. Enter the Bureau of Land Management and a dispute they have with the Humane Society of the United States.
Here’s the crisis in a nutshell for your consideration.

There wont be any wildlife left if the horses are left alone. The ecosystem cant survive.
Lisa Docter that is awesome that you have adopted. if I was in a position where I could I would also. The thing that is sad is that the cows hold value which means someone has reason to care for and feed them. In the case the horses don’t for economic reason only. “I am not saving these horses have not value” if there was a way that we could give economic value to these horses the problem would be solved. But try as I might I can not think of a way to do it.
If there people willing to adopt them then get them to adopt. Ita 125.00 to adopt a wild mustang, 25.00 if you get a sales authority one.
Have you seen these wild horses? If the ASPCA saw then in someone’s fence, there’d be charges for neglect. The herds are in bad shape. I consider myself a conservationist, and as such, we need to do one of two things: introduce predators, or manually reduce the population.
This genocide is unnecessary.
If the grazing was truly in danger they wouldnt be putting cattle on it. As in welfare ranchers that get cheap grazing on federal and state land. And then kick the horses off. Cattle tear up grazing in that they congregate at watering holes. Horses move. Cattle have no insisors and rip grasses out of the ground. As apposed to horses which cut the grass.
There are little predators because we wipe them out including the ranchers. When they dont have hunting competitions for predators they do it off season. As in: SSS. Shoot Shovel Shut up.
The adoption program has suffered from poor marketing and promotion. Only recently has it gotten a little better. A blurry picture would get posted with a number. Only recently they’ve bothered with video. I have had horses from the Kiger herds in Oregon. The Kiger and Riddle land managment areas. You will never see Kiger Mustangs on this list. Why. Because they are managed and marketed. Gathers only happen every few years and all get adopted.
There are options.
I’m not even going to get into the indigenous debate. Because no one will even listen.
We are destroying this land and balance over greed and egocentric positions. We live off the fat and toss the rest away. Then you get people that are not willing to live with the messiness of nature. And inadvertently feed the greed. And it makes me sick.
And no one talks. This is all just parallel monologues sitting side by side.
and by no means to I agree with their way of thinking. It is just the way things are

They removed the Wolves is why the Elk population grew. They put the Wolves back in, all is good.
Why don’t he do this for BLM!
someone clarify for me please. for years democrats have demonized hunters as murderers for protecting their lands from wolves, lions and bears or filling their freezer with deer elk or moose. but destroying a huge % of a species population…because they are inconvenient??? sounds a lot like the pro choice left should take a LONG look in the mirror. my hope is that the animals do not for in vain. at least put the meat and hide to good use
