Did you know that there is a “1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act?” Probably not, but then when one considers the volume of legislation created just at the federal level — legislation that remains in force, the normal reaction would be one of astonishment, of being utterly overwhelmed, of one’s eyes just glazing over. No wonder congressmen and senators have no idea what they’re voting on much of the time.
Anyway, apparently we have a crisis of excess horses and burrows running wild in western states. Enter the Bureau of Land Management and a dispute they have with the Humane Society of the United States.
Here’s the crisis in a nutshell for your consideration.

These horses are either cosine red unadoptable due to disease or have not been adopted. The BLM holds adoption clinics all of the time and hundreds of horses are adopted, that’s only a small dent in the thousands that are in BLM custody, again, please do your research on this. Yes it is very very sad and disturbing but it is because of good hearted folks who thought they were doing what is best for the horses that caused this problem to begin with. Sometimes what is truly best may be distasteful and awful but must be done. These Herds must be thinned for the welfare and continued survival of the rest.
They aren’t over grazing the land thats just what the BLM tells you….if there is no food left why do they want to put cattle on it! SMH
WTF..WHY..asshole
The real problem is (people) that as cities/developments expand the first to go are preditors. Not just by the removal of thier habitat but also killing them. They are more likely to attack people and that cannot be tolerated. When you take away an ecosystems primary preditor it causes massive impact all the way down to how the earth erodes. Look at Yellowstone as my main point. They found that after reintroducing wolves to the park erosion slowed exponentially. Wolves started killing the herbivores that were decimating the plant life that was literally holding the ground together because they had no preditor to keep thier #s down.
Your an idiot also
What are the doing with all that meat?? Hunters outta be able to use that meat. I understand the love of those animals. But it is meat none the less. And to just kill those animals, just to destroy them, is a very bad use of an otherwise great resource. I’m sure I’m gonna get flack for this comment. But really, just think about it. 45,000 animals just slaughtered for the purpose of extermination. That’s just wrong.
And yes there are adoption fees. It costs money to house, feed and vet care. The taxpayers are footing the bill of 80% of herd management the other 20% comes from donations and adoption fees
So a slow painful death of starvation and disease is preferable?
Loyd this is a honest debate. It is a crappy situation with no good answers. But when it comes to being good stewards sometimes there are hard decisions to make. With you joining this without anything constructive to add you are just whining and nobody likes a whiner.
Actually it’s not the BLM I have spoken to its the folks who truly care about our wild horse herds and their preservation. Like I said, become informed. Now it’s my turn to smh
