Obama Admin Agrees To Pay Iran $1.7 Billion Out of the Taxpayer Till

Payment Made to Iran

Preceding the attack on the U.S. embassy, Iran had been purchasing military equipment from the U.S. In fact, at that time there was a $400 million balance held by the U.S. pending future purchases by Iran. After the attack, with relations between the U.S. and Iran shattered, Iran filed a claim at the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal in the Hague to get the $400 million back. The U.S. refused to release the funds, in part due to the refusal of Iran to compensate the prisoners or to pay for the compound that was damaged.

Now it seems that the Obama administration, led by the weak and malleable John Kerry, has acquiesced and decided to return to the Iran regime the principle, along with a very healthy amount of interest. When Obama began his presidency, he conducted a world tour where he bowed to various world leaders, seemingly to show that the U.S. was no longer the world power it had been in the past.

Kerry also shows that no indignity is too great, and no humiliation too deep for the Obama administration when it comes to managing international relations on behalf of the U.S.  This administration has once again shown that they are not up to the task.

“In 1981, with the reaching of the Algiers Accords and the creation of the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal, Iran filed a claim for these funds, tying them up in litigation at the Tribunal,” the statement indicates.

The $1.7 billion payment stems from the original $400 million plus $1.3 billion in interest the State Department agreed to pay on that money.
