Assistant chief of police, Anita Najiy, created a bone of contention between the Miami Police Department and the Fraternal Order of Police President, Javier Ortiz, after she refused to hold her hand over her heart for the Pledge of Allegiance during a recent promotional ceremony.
Ortiz became livid in seeing Najiy refuse to honor the Pledge, stating that she failed to exhibit courtesy and etiquette that “must be exercised when wearing a law enforcement uniform.”
“If you’re not pledging allegiance to the United States, my question is what country are you pledging allegiance to?” Ortiz asks. “Anyone who isn’t offended by that is not American, because when you become a U.S. citizen, you pledge allegiance to the US.”
Ortiz also states that Najiy’s disrepect comes from her Muslim belief, but that normal “protections” or exemptions generally given in the name of religious freedom and speech doesn´t apply to those in police uniform because “you’re supposed to be neutral.”

I do not know the persons reasons – my point is not about ‘the persons or their reasons. It is about what is do be expected of a person when/if they chooseto accept a position and the responsiblities and purpose of that position. if a person expresses his/her unwillingness to respect the symbols of the laws of this land than why should the employer (in this case the local government) feel some obligation to give that person a job or position they openly demonstrate an act of disrespect. TO me it is like you being coach of a team and deciding the team should adopt a 3-4 defense and me openly stating, in the presence of the team, I do not believe in the 3-4 – I only play MLB on a 4-3, however; I want to be MLB so everyone on the team must accept that. If you do not choose to go with the flow than you must choose to not be part of the team. Don, you and I will never find agreement or even middleground on this, it seems – so let us respectfully end this conversation.
