McCain Slams Trump From Hospital Bed

When news of John McCain’s brain cancer became known, President Trump was one of the first to wish him well and hope for a good recovery in a public statement. In addition, it’s believed the president phoned McCain to express his concern personally.

Never one to let a gracious gesture set aside politics, McCain immediately slammed the president for the decision to end the failed CIA program for Syrian rebels.

His tweet on Thursday not only hit the decision, it insinuated President Trump made the call to curry favor with Russian president Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Assad:

Reports admin ending prgm to assist Syrian opposition irresponsible, short-sighted& plays into Russia, Assad’s hands”

The Syrian government has made significant strides in reclaiming territory taken by ISIS and other radical Islamist groups. The assistance of Russian military forces has played a pivotal role in its success.

The ill-considered Obama/CIA program to fund, train and arm alleged rebels proved a major debacle after its beginning in 2013. At one point in July 2015, reports surfaced that after millions of dollars were spent, only 60 fighters were properly trained.

At that time, it was estimated that ISIS had between 20,000 and 30,000 soldiers.

The news kept getting worse as the inadequacy of the CIA program become more apparent.

But several of the US-trained rebels were captured when they entered Syria in July. Al-Nusra Islamists released video earlier this month of the captured US trained rebels in Azaz, Syria.”

The US-trained rebels were taken hostage as they crossed into Syria from Turkey. And then there was this…The remaining US-trained fighters refused to fight, saying they were misled by the Obama administration.”

As time when on, some of the rebels split off from the opposition groups to fight for ISIS and Al-Nusra against coalition forces. The very arms provided by the United States were used in that Islamist effort.

The Trump decision came after the president consulted with CIA director Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster prior to attending the G20 summit in Germany.  The consensus was not to throw more good money after bad.

At the summit, President Trump and Russian President Putin agreed to a ceasefire in southwest Syria along the Jordanian border. The decision to end the CIA training was not a part of that agreement.

Russia has long expressed its dissatisfaction with the CIA program, arguing it was “a hostile act” against a sovereign nation, Syria.

McCain personally invested a great deal of time in convincing the Obama administration to agree to the program. Joining him in that effort was his sidekick, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. Graham also expressed his frustration with the Trump decision.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., issued a series of tweets Wednesday saying the move was troublesome. He referred to it as a “complete capitulation to Assad, Russia and Iran” and he said it would be a loss for Syrians who have been attacked by Assad, the United States’ Arab partners and American standing in the Middle East.

It remains to be seen how media hostile to the president, globalist elites and the Deep State will try to spin the decision as part of the Russia collusion fake news.

One thing’s for sure. Despite having the most serious type of brain cancer, John McCain hasn’t lost an ounce of his feistiness or antipathy for President Trump.  No matter how grim the prognosis, McCain will keep fighting till the bitter end.
