Leftist Seattle Council is ready to tax guns and bullets.

The Seattle law is based on a similar $25 gun tax that passed in Cook County, Illinois, in 2013. That’s Chicago, folks. And we all are reading each week how well the severe crackdown of gun violence is helping there.

The Seattle budget office loftily estimates the law will raise $300,000 to $500,000 a year. What they don’t estimate is how close the next city is that will not tax guns and bullets and thus will get all the business as well as the sales tax. Not real bright for Seattle.

According to Fox News:
Seattle estimates that direct medical costs from gunshot wounds totaled $17 million last year, with taxpayers picking up $12 million of the costs. The Urban Institute estimated that gun violence costs U.S. taxpayers $500 million a year. They never seem to report how many lives and property is saved by firearms.
The Seattle law also requires mandatory reporting on lost or stolen guns.

The National Rifle Association criticized the law, saying it penalizes poor residents of crime-ridden neighborhoods who have the greatest need to protect themselves. Read about it here.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation, also opposes the law saying it is worthless, since criminals do not purchase guns legally.

Imposing taxes and restrictions to make the public more helpless and predators more bold is boldly bad thinking. Besides, the city isn’t going to raise tax revenue. Buyers will go elsewhere.
