When Donald Trump secured the Republican nomination, Barack Obama probably thought that his legacy was secure. The man everyone said could not win was going up against Hillary Clinton, the woman who pledged to keep Obama’s legacy intact.
Unfortunately for Obama, almost everyone got it wrong. Donald Trump won big in November, and now eight years of Obama-era regulations are set to be dismantled under the new president-elect.
But Obama isn’t giving up. Despite having warned Trump to not over-use executive orders, the lame duck president is now using all the power at his disposal to keep Trump from undoing his fragile legacy.
Obama’s latest last-minute power-grab has to do with offshore drilling. Trump may have campaigned on a promise to make America more energy independent, but if Obama gets his way, he may not be able to.

William Adams , all renewable energy sources are currently less than 10% of our annual consumption ( EIA statistics). The most we could reasonably source from biomass is 25 – 30% of our electricity production, not covering any transportation fuel needs. Certainly more room to utilize biomass and not deplete carbon stocks in vegetation, but we need all available sources of energy to have the lifestyle we enjoy. One acre of switchgrass will yield ~64 million btu/year, that is enough energy to power ~6,000 homes for one hour if used to drive a steam turbine at around 30% efficiency ( efficiency range you could reasonably achieve) . So yes, it can create useful energy, a question of how many acres are available to produce the grass while not being able to use it for other production. To survive on renewables alone, each home in the US would need to be limited to using the electricity of one low wattage lightbulb at a time, we would still be short for heating and transportation needs.
I produce heat and power with biomass, and support its expanded utilization, but our expectations need to be realistic to find real answers to real problems. It requires all the excess biomass resources in a 50 mile radius to heat and power a small city of ~10,000 in an efficient and sustainable fashion. This is what’s left after all the higher value products have been created with the plant material. There are many regions in the country where expanded biomass utilization could occur, to reduce dependence on other energy types. But the cost is oftentimes the driving force, hard to beat the energy density of fossil fuels.
