Kuwait Enacts Its Own Ban on Travel from Selected Muslim Nations

We live in an odd time where political correctness and the assumed rights of foreign citizens are taken as more important by some vocal elements within our country than the safety of Americans at home. It’s backwards, but this is the sort of thing that we’ve come to expect from much of the left. Right now their criticism is focused on President Trump’s ban on travel from seven countries in which there is a substantial Muslim population even though there are nations with far larger Muslim populations that are not part of the ban.

You would expect the most vocal opposition to come from those countries that are included in this travel ban, and you would largely be correct. However, there are Muslim nations that are supportive of President Trump’s policy. For example, the foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates recently stated that the ban is an internal matter of the United States and is not an attack on any faith.

Now Kuwait has taken action very similar to what the US government has done, and has banned travel from selected Muslim states.

Citizens from five Muslim-majority countries will no longer be able to obtain Kuwaiti visas, after reports the Gulf state issued tight entry restrictions that mirrored US President Donald Trump’s Muslim ban.

Syrians, Iraqis, Iranians, Pakistanis and Afghans will not be able to obtain visit, tourism or trade Kuwaiti visas with the news coming one day after the US slapped its own restrictions on seven Muslim-majority countries.

Passport holders from the countries will no lot be allowed to enter the Gulf state while the blanket ban is in place and have been told not to apply to visas.

Kuwaiti sources told local media that the restrictions were in place due to the “instability” in the five countries and that the ban would be lifted once the security situation improves.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have all witnessed violence from extremist groups, while Syria and Iraq are embroiled in internal conflicts.

What is the Kuwaiti motivation to take this action?

Kuwait is concerned about the threat of extremist groups such as al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group with both militant organisations have a presence in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Kuwaiti leadership has taken a look at the situation, and guess what? They don’t want terrorists coming to their nation to destabilize it either. To make the point rather bluntly, this is a Muslim government banning travel to their country by residents of selected Muslim nations.

The idea that Donald Trump is on some mission to denigrate Muslims is absurd. It is an unfortunately fact that much of the terrorist activity worldwide is perpetrated by those who at least claim to be Muslims. They are responsible for their own actions, no one else. If it were not for the terrorism issue, it’s doubtful Mr. Trump would even give much thought to the Muslim faith one way or another.

That President Trump as well as other leaders, including Muslim leaders in predominantly Muslim nations, want to keep terrorists out of their countries should not come as a surprise. One important function of government is to defend its citizens.

That this job is not always going to fit neatly into the imaginary and politically-correct world of many on the left is just a fact of life.
