“Know the Enemy:” 11 Revealing Quotes From Vladimir Putin

This made a lot of foreign news headlines for about a minute and a half less than a month ago, but it bears attention.  Although it may not impact the United States outright, it is a marked departure from European basic foundation of conventional wisdom when it comes to Leftist politics there.

Catalonia is the wealthiest part of Spain.  If this was about the United States, it would be as if New York City (if we were talking about GDP) decided that it no longer wanted to be part of New York State and claimed independence.  New York State would immediately be bankrupted.  Tax revenue from NYC alone is enough to run three third-world nations.

Catalonia’s people were angry over the fact that they were disproportionately on the hook for most of the country’s debts, including those to the European Union.  They decided that they no longer wanted this and chose to hold an election to vote on secession.  The Spanish government intervened and troops literally stormed the polls and stole election equipment, including computers, ballots, and power sources.  It was an unmitigated public relations disaster for Spain’s government.  The UN had its people there watching the progress with a keen eye and day after day, Spanish government troops were ensuring that this vote would not take place.

Regardless, the people found a way and it was unanimous:  Independence.  But, the government will not recognize its declaration.  Here’s what Putin has to say about it:

On Catalonia’s Independence:  “At one time, the EU welcomed the collapse of a whole range of states in Europe, not bothering to hide their glee. Why did they need to so thoughtlessly – for the sake of short-term interests and to please ‘Big Brother’ in Washington – unconditionally support the secession of Kosovo, provoking similar processes on the continent and beyond?”

TRANSLATION:  The European Union, on the short choker leash of the United States thought nothing of all the former Soviet Union states declaring their independence from us and actually cheered it on, even funding in large part many of those states.  In fact, most of them are part of the European Union today.  So, don’t ask me about how badly I feel about the same thing happening to one of your precious little member states.  Catalonia is irrelevant.  Let’s talk about how your indifference to our people’s suffering led to horrible consequences of starvation, unemployment and death.

Oh, man, does Putin have the EU’s number.  He rightly called them out for their blatant hypocrisy and for having been Washington toadies back in the ’80s and ’90s.  Don’t get me wrong, I understand that Putin didn’t specifically mention the Soviet Union, but make no mistake, that’s EXACTLY to what he was referring when he chose to substitute Kosovo.
