House Committee Investigates New Allegations in Iran Nuclear/Prisoner Swap Deal

An oversight committee in the House of Representatives has reacted to a report out of Politico that cites multiple examples of rampant disregard for U.S. law and national security by undermining a direct effort to limit Iran’s ability to develop weapons of mass destruction.

Representatives Chaffetz (R-UT) and DeSantis (R-FL) have penned letters to both Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson demanding information on a variety of issues dealing with the Obama Iran Nuclear contract that he signed late in his second term.  The deal was touted by the administration in the months leading up to its implementation as a ground-breaking approach to a hostile nation that would lead to international cooperation between the two nations, as well as allow for “greater oversight” of its nuclear facilities while also providing its poverty-stricken people with needed power through nuclear energy.

The problem with this assessment and the narrative that was shoved down the throats of Americans in the preceding months of its implementation is that it was a complete lie in order to accomplish a few key goals.

The House and Senate lawmakers cited various portions of an April 24 report by POLITICO that found that the Obama administration, through actions in some cases and inaction in others, significantly hampered a much-touted federal law enforcement effort known as the National Counterproliferation Initiative at a time when it was making unprecedented headway in thwarting Iran’s illicit weapons proliferation activities.

The POLITICO investigation also reported that during their public rollout of the two deals, Obama and other key administration officials downplayed the threat posed by the Iranian traffickers they were freeing as part of the swap that also freed five Americans held by Iran. The Obama administration officials focused their public comments only on seven Iranian-born men in the U.S. whose convictions or prosecutions were being dropped as part of the swap, and described them as civilians involved in mere sanctions-related offenses but not charged with terrorism or any violent offenses.

The gist of this report is that at the time of the push by the Obama administration to enter into “talks” with Iran about its nuclear capabilities, it had already determined that the U.S. National Counterproliferation Initiative was a stumbling block to their efforts to swap hostages and allow Iran the freedom to pursue its nuclear ambitions.  Therefore, in a series of moves to bypass the Initiative, Obama scattered his troops in all directions to speak on Liberal talk shows, news programs, to magazines and newspapers, and of course to its lapdog NPR, in order to put out the narrative to the American people that the United States had nothing to fear from the “Death to America” crowd, that Iran was merely “acting out” in an effort to get us (the big, bad American infidels) to pay attention to them and finally admit our failings as a superpower when dealing with a non-nuclear Iran.

It was the contention of Barrack Obama that Iran was not a threat, that they were only wishing to build nuclear facilities on behalf of its people, despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary from Israeli intelligence on the ground and in the air, and laid out quite proficiently by its prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations.  There is even a rumor that Obama specifically rebuffed Netanyahu for the exact reasons that this U.S. Initiative that blocked Iran from attaining nuclear capability was one of the prime minister’s focuses.

Additionally, there were a specific number of 21 Iranian nationals (14 of whom were convicted or suspected terrorists who provided information to Iran regarding the construction of nuclear weapons) that were to be secretly used in the illegal prisoner swap and embezzlement of Treasury funds to supplement this deal.  This was yet another example of how the Obama administration undermined national security, because these 14 Iranian nationals (described as “citizens”) were terrorists of the most dangerous type.  Obama was, in essence, making a unilateral decision to release terrorists to their home nation in an effort to initiate and finish this deal.

We all know about the secret planes used to drop off the billions in unmarked Swiss bills and the middle-of-the-night exchange that took place with hostages only when such money had been received, but the effort to circumvent the National Counterproliferation Initiative is enough of a reason to fully investigate this perceived treasonous activity.

As testament to the fact that Obama knew the American people would never agree to these conditions, he kept the information from us and lied about his intentions.

Late Thursday, 13 senators led by Republican David Perdue of Georgia also wrote to Sessions, Tillerson and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to say they were concerned about issues raised in the POLITICO report, and to ask for a broad array of documents.

“We write to request your assistance in providing Congress with more information regarding the Obama Administration’s decision” to drop the charges or convictions in the 21 cases, the senators wrote, quoting from the POLITICO article. “Based on new reports, we are concerned that President Obama and certain previous administration officials intentionally suppressed the seriousness of the charges against these individuals in order to garner public support for the nuclear deal with Iran, and we fear that these individuals may still pose a threat to the national security of the United States.”

The senators’ letter, released Friday, was co-signed by Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC), James Inhofe (R-OK), John Boozman (R-AK), Ben Sasse (R-NE), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Mike Lee (R-UT), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Tim Scott (R-SC) and Luther Strange (R-Ala.).

The senators, in their letter, included a list of questions they wanted answered, including whether the 21 men whose cases were dropped were “still engaging in illicit activities on behalf of the Iranian government.”

For their part, Representatives Chaffetz and DeSantis have requested an enormous amount of documents from the State Department and the DOJ (both of which appear to be cooperating).

The two committee leaders demanded all documents relating to the January 16, 2016, prisoner exchange agreement with Iran, including the negotiations that preceded it. They also asked for any and all information about the 21 Iranian-born men for whom the U.S. dropped convictions or charges and international arrest warrants, and information about whether State and Justice department officials delayed or blocked efforts to lure Iranian suspects to U.S.-friendly countries so they could be arrested, citing details in the POLITICO report.

But the committee leaders also made it clear that their investigation would delve into much broader topics. For instance, they asked for information not only about all individuals and entities whose cases or convictions were dropped, but also any “for whom any enforcement action was modified or cancelled in connection with the [swap], and indicate the action taken and how it was modified or cancelled.”

And they asked for information about “any Iranian national or entity investigated for, charged with, or convicted of engaging in violations of export controls, terrorism, arms sales, nonproliferation, money laundering, or other financial crimes, from January 1, 2013, to the present.”

Whether or not these Republicans will make any headway remains to be seen, but it is certainly a step in the right direction.  If it can be proven that these actions did in fact take place as alleged, it would appear that President Trump’s administration will be very busy ferreting out all the government workers still working in both the State Department and the DOJ who remain loyal to Obama and tendering their resignations.

Chances are, the number of these individuals is astronomical.
