Germany Can No Longer ‘Fully Rely’ on the US Says Merkel

No doubt Mrs. Merkel wishes Mr. Obama were still president. The whole Brexit thing is a thorn in Merkel’s side. Put bluntly, Germany is starting to feel a bit alone out there as it continues to pour immigrants into the country, immigrants who have no intention whatsoever of even tolerating German culture let alone assimilating into it. With a bit more effort, Merkel might even be able to ignite a civil war in her own nation.

And President Trump recently gave her the cold shoulder as well as making the audacious suggestion that there are some European countries that need to pay more for their own defense.

German chancellor Angela Merkel distanced herself from the US and the UK during a campaign event in Munich on Sunday.

“The times in which [Germany] could fully rely on others are partly over. I have experienced this in the last few days,” Merkel said during the event. “We Europeans really have to take our destiny into our own hands.”

Though she did not mention them by name, Merkel was most likely referring to the fractured relationship Germany now shares with the US, as well as with the UK post-Brexit.

Note this quote in particular: “We Europeans really have to take our destiny into our own hands.” Really, Mrs. Merkel? You are just now figuring that out?  Or have you come to the horrifying realization that the U.S. and the U.K. might not be willing to subsidize the asinine policies you and your friends in the rest of Europe wish to pursue.

Merkel, in a decision that was slammed by nationalists like Trump and France’s Marine Le Pen, allowed hundreds of thousands of refugees to enter Germany. Trudeau has also signaled that he will open Canada’s borders to those fleeing war and terrorism in their own countries.

So Trudeau has observed the disaster that open immigration has inflicted on Germany and has decided to bring that to Canada. Maybe Canada will break up after all. If Trudeau has his way, our northern border might look a bit more foreboding.

In another departure from traditional US foreign policy, Trump criticized key NATO allies at a summit on Thursday and said they were not spending enough on defense. He also warned of more attacks similar to the Manchester bombing unless the alliance did more to stop militants.

Few things will infuriate the globalists ruling Europe more than telling them to pay their “fair share” for their defense. How can they be expected to fund lavish welfare programs for immigrants if they must support themselves?

In an acknowledgement of potential rifts between Germany and the US on the world stage, Merkel emphasized a close Franco-German alliance during her campaign event on Sunday. She wished Macron success in his presidency and said, “Where Germany can help, Germany will help, because Germany can only do well if Europe is doing well.”

Her comments mark a radical shift in US-German relations, as well as the American relationship with Western Europe as a whole.

Those rifts are more than potential, and the relationship between the US and Germany is shifting, as well it should. And what about a German Chancellor who confesses that her country can only prosper if the rest of Europe prospers? Globalism on steroids.

Give Germany and the rest of the nations of Europe a few years and their cultures and their nations will exist only in the history books. Brexit will look like a stroke of genius by the Brits. And President Trump will be vindicated, even if the left will never admit it.
