Flint Looks to Evict Thousands of Families That Won’t Pay for Poisoned Water

Last Friday, the city mailed notices to 8,000 homes that are delinquent in paying their water bill. The notice demanded full payment of the balance due in order to prevent a lien from being placed on the home.

For those who refuse to pay their bills in full by May 19, the city will foreclose on their homes and take them.”

Once families began to experience adverse reactions to the tainted water, they quit using it and refused to pay their water bill. For many residents, the water still has not reached a safe level for use.

Residents are still unable to drink the water, leaving most families to rely on bottled water for everything from brushing their teeth to cooking and bathing.”

Nonetheless, city officials are adamant in insisting on payment of the water bills. Residents dispute the city’s need for the revenue, citing a $100 million grant from the EPA to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to pay for upgrades to the city’s drinking water infrastructure.

Al Mooney of the city’s Treasury Department reports that shutoff and lien threats brought in nearly $3 million in revenue last month, up from the $2.1 million collected in the prior month.

He speculated that liens placed on the 8,000 homes in question could produce almost $6 million in revenue.

Local clean water activist Melissa Mays says she owes about $900 in past due bills. Now she faces the prospect of having to compromise her principles to save her home.

Since discovering she, her husband, and her three children had all been poisoned by the water coming out of their tap, Mays stopped paying her water bill. Now, the city who poisoned her is threatening to take their home if she continues to refuse to pay for poison water.”

The water crisis has resulted in criminal charges for city and state officials who misled regulators about the water crisis. In addition, Mayor Karen Weaver has been accused of stealing charitable donations targeted to help fix the water system to advance her political career.

In spite of multiple officials facing criminal charges, there hasn’t been a single conviction. The only people to face any consequences thus far, over the atrocity in Flint, are the citizens who are forced to pay for unusable water.”

The threat to take residents’ homes simply boils down to outright thievery by alleged public servants who are doing a grave disservice to their constituents.
