Dem. Senator: First Amendment Does Not Apply To You, Only To Your Church. Or Whatever.

Sen. Baldwin adapted a common leftist mis-interpretation of the Second Amendment to distort the rights described in the First. The owner of a bakery, for example, doesn’t deserve freedom of religion under the First Amendment and cannot refuse to bake a wedding cake for a gay ceremony, regardless of his beliefs, because Baldwin thinks freedom of religion only applies to churches and other religious institutions, not individuals! Who determines what constitutes a church? Well, probably Sen. Baldwin and her progressive cohorts.

In effect, Baldwin hopes to completely marginalize the First Amendment and let the government seize control of who can worship, and, as long as it’s the First Amendment, who can speak, what they can pray for and what they are permitted to say. Here’s her logic, in her own words:

“Certainly the first amendment says that in institutions of faith that there is absolute power to, you know, to observe deeply held religious beliefs. I don’t think it extends far beyond that. We’ve seen the set of arguments play out in issues such as access to contraception. Should it be the individual pharmacist whose religious beliefs guides whether a prescription is filled, or in this context, they’re talking about expanding this far beyond our churches and synagogues to businesses and individuals across this country. I think there are clear limits that have been set in other contexts and we ought to abide by those in this new context across America.”
