Communist Leaders in Russia Urge Putin to send Missiles to Cuba

If someone slept through the late 1980s and early 1990s and did not witness the collapse of the Soviet Union, they might think that the Berlin Wall is still standing today based on the icy relationship between the United States and Russia.

Just this April, a Russian fighter jet flew provocative patterns over a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Baltic Sea.  Intent on further stirring the pot, another Russian jet conducted a risky barrel roll over a U.S. reconnaissance plane — also over the Baltic Sea.

Considering all of the tension between the two nations, it is not shocking that Russia Today is now reporting that communist elements within the Russian government are pushing Vladimir Putin to send missiles to Cuba, in a cold war-like move.

Two senior lawmakers representing the Communist Party propose to deploy missile systems to Cuba and resume the work of the Lourdes spy base in reply to US plans that could threaten Russia and its allies.

According to Parlamentskaya Gazeta daily, Valery Rashkin and Sergey Obukhov addressed President Vladimir Putin with a letter in which they write that they had learned of the Pentagon’s plans to place HIMARS multiple-launch missile systems in Turkey.

Some officials within the Russian government believe that the suggestion is simply a populist dog whistle by communist leaders, as the United States and Cuba have reestablished diplomatic relations.  Although many Russian leaders claim they do not want to do anything to sour the U.S.-Russian relationship, this is difficult to believe considering the aggressive actions in the Baltic Sea and provocative rhetoric coming from many corners of the Kremlin.
