16-Year-Old To Vote In Elections?

In 2016 there is a chance that 16-year-olds in Washington D.C. will also be voting.  Three City Council members recently proposed lowering the age for federal voting in the District from 18 to 16.

Ward 6 Council member Charles Allan is the chief author behind the Youth Vote Amendment Act of 2015. He said Tuesday that there’s nothing in the 26th Amendment that forbids younger Americans from voting, and that the Constitution only ensures that those 18 or older have the right to vote. Council members David Grosso and Brianne Nadeau co-introduced the legislation.

Anyone who has visited a typical high school lately will agree it is hard to imagine that 16 year olds are either informed enough or invested enough to vote wisely.

This leads one to wonder if there is some agenda that is motivating politicos to encourage voting that seems to be merely voting for votings’ sake. Rather than making voting easier, perhaps we should question what a citizen should know and what experience they should have that would make them eligible to participate in this most important civic activity.

It is disappointing at best that elected officials would treat this privilege of electing our civic leaders in such a cavalier way.
