2. Watergate Scandal
President Richard Nixon tasked 5 men to secretly break into the Democratic national committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel. However, they got arrested. The attempted conspiracy to cover up the break-in and Nixon’s role in the burglary ended up shining even more light onto the affair. The so-called Watergate Scandal ended up with more than 70 government officials being charged. Nixon resigned as president in the end, rather than face impeachment.
An odd effect of the Watergate scandal was that many future political scandals were also labeled with the suffix “-gate”.
