Walmart Cuts Thousands of Jobs in Stagnant Economy

As 7,000 jobs are eliminated at Walmart, those now holding those jobs can look forward to a cut in pay, if the company is able to keep them on as employees.

The chain said workers will be transitioned into other roles that involve interacting with customers, though they may get pay cuts.

In other words, those working in accounting will be moved to checkout jobs — at a lesser rate of pay, of course. Can the current employees be sure that there will be a job, even at a lower rate of pay? Says a Walmart representative,

“There are roles for all of these folks and we are aiming to have everyone transition into those roles wherever possible,” she said.

There is nothing inherently wrong with technological progress.  Nobody with any sense would suggest we ditch computers and go back to manual typewriters. But a healthy economy would be creating jobs, with new stores opening to hire new employees.

That’s not what appears to be happening at Walmart or at other retailers nationwide. And as we’ve pointed out before, that’s not what’s happening in our economy under Obama’s leadership. Whether it’s the impact of Obamacare or just the fruits of his failed Keynesian economic policies, the American worker does not have a real friend in the White House.
