UC Irvine Student Vote To Ban American Flag Because It Represents ‘Imperialism’ and ‘Weapons’

Students at the University of California in Irvine voted this week to ban the American flag to make the campus more “culturally inclusive.”

“The American flag has been flown in instances of colonialism and imperialism,” stated Matthew Guevara, UC’s Social Ecology Representative, who authored the resolution. “Flags not only serve as symbols of patriotism or weapons for nationalism, but also construct cultural mythologies and narratives that in turn charge nationalistic sentiments.”
