Students Denied Entry to High School Football Game Because They had American Flags

They were not worried about being turned away at the gate because the principal and their instructors reassured them that the items would be welcome at the game. Yet when they got there, security told them to leave the flags outside the entrance, with one student who wore an American flag t-shirt being forced to leave the game.

According to several of the students who were denied entry to the game, the directive to turn away anybody with an American flag was made by the school’s athletic director. If this was the case, then the director overrode the principal’s express will that students carrying the flag be allowed into the game, a serious act of overreach that will complicate the incident even further:

“A school spokesperson said the decision had nothing to do with a lack of patriotism.

‘The students, in fact our students, run on the field with an American flag and so the only thing we will review is what items in the student section would give the best game day experience for our students, the people behind them,’ she said.

A similar situation unfolded in South Carolina at a high school’s opening football game. Officials said they did not want American flags in the stadium because they feared fans would use them to taunt the Hispanic members of the opposing team.”
