Sheriff’s Office Will Not Charge Trump with Inciting a Riot

Donald Trump has escaped charges stemming from the violence at his rallies this week, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

“With respect to the potential of lodging charges of inciting a riot against Donald J. Trump, or the Trump Committee, we have reviewed the evidence accumulated, and consulted with the detectives involved,” a Sheriffs Office news release said later Monday. ” The Sheriff’s Office legal counsel advised, and the Sheriff concurred, that the evidence does not meet the requisites of the law as established under the relevant North Carolina statute and case law to support a conviction of the crime of inciting a riot.”

The release said no warrants or indictments likely will be sought or issued.

“While other aspects of our investigation are continuing, the investigation with regard to Mr. Trump and his campaign has been concluded, and no charges are anticipated,” the release said.

Trump has struck a more conciliatory tone ahead of this week’s slate of winner-take-all primary elections, but confrontations between his legion of loyal supporters and protesters who accuse him of stoking racial hatred have become increasingly contentious.

Two days after the Fayetteville rally, Trump canceled one planned in Chicago because of safety concerns after protesters packed the arena where he was scheduled to speak.

In Fayetteville, lawyer Allen Rogers said Jones is considering filing a civil lawsuit against the Sheriff’s Office.

From Jones’ account, Rogers said, he was not involved in the initial protest that led deputies to escort Jones and those who were with him out of the coliseum.

“So at that moment, was he in the care and custody of the sheriff’s department, and if he was, was there some duty to protect him?” Rogers asked.

Video shows deputies leading Jones up coliseum steps when a man identified as McGraw stepped across the aisle and threw his elbow into Jones’ face.

Now that we know that Trump didn’t meet the criteria needed in order to have charges filed against him, it seems irresponsible and dangerous that it was ever suggested by the office that he could have been charged in the first place. In this media, assertions are often more interesting than fact.
