Senior Vatican Official: Pope Francis Covered Up Sexual Abuse, Should Resign

A senior Vatican official is calling on Pope Francis to resign, accusing him of covering up sexual abuse allegations against an influential American cardinal.

An 11-page open letter penned by Carlo Maria Viganò, a former papal nuncio alleges that both Pope Francis and his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, knew about allegations against Cardinal Theodore McCarrick for decades but did nothing. McCarrick is the former Archbishop of Washington, DC who was removed from active ministry in June 2018 after it was revealed that he had sexually abused generations’ worth of junior seminarians and young priests as a priest.
