San Antonio Cop Shot And Killed In Broad Daylight

San Antonio, Texas became the latest site of deadly anti-police violence this past weekend when officer Benjamin Marconi was shot and killed by an unknown assailant. Such an incident is shocking in and of itself, but it was made all the more unexpected by the fact that it occurred in broad daylight just across the street from the headquarters of the city police department, serving as a chilling reminder that law enforcement is constantly at risk in today’s toxic environment:

“Chief William McManus said a black vehicle pulled up behind the officer’s squad car while the officer was inside writing a ticket.

A man stepped out of the car, walked over to the passenger side of the officer’s car and shot him in the head. The gunman reached into the squad car and fired a second time.

The man then got into his car and fled.

Police are investigating the motive for the shooting. They describe the suspect as a black male with a beard. He is about 5 feet 7 inches to 6 feet tall. He was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and black baggy pants.

Police released a photo Sunday night of a man who “might have information” on the shooting.

“This is everyone’s worst nightmare,” McManus said. “You never want to see anything like this happen. Unfortunately, like Dallas, like Baton Rouge, it’s happened here now.”

The shooting came less than five months after a gunman killed five officers in Dallas who were working a protest about the fatal police shootings of black men in Minnesota and Louisiana. It was the deadliest day for American law enforcement since Sept. 11, 2001.”
