Wednesday marked a momentous attack for Russia's week old campaign in Syria. The naval bombardment of ISIS targets ramped up Russia's presence in the Middle East and let the Islamic State know that they mean business. Though at this point, there seems to be quite a few questions about whether Russia's primary goal is to fight the Islamic State or to protect Assad. Either way, Russia's naval bombardment is being deemed a success by both Putin and the Russian media.
The attack took place just off the coast, from the Caspian sea, using long range missiles that hit targets 1,500 kilometers away. Four Russian ships fired 26 missiles, hitting 11 targets.
