Report: South Korea Preparing a “Surgical Strike” North Korean’s Command, Missile and Nuclear Facilities

According to unnamed government officials, the goal of such a pre-emptive attack would be to wipe out North Korea’s command, missile and nuclear facilities. Plans for the scenario were expected to be provided to President Moon sometime this week.

The scenario is being prepared by South Korean Special Forces in a separate and distinct effort from standard defense preparations carried out by the country’s military.

The South Korean military’s own strike-hit scenarios include plans to create a special mission brigade of 1,000 to 2,000 at the end of this year as one of the KMPR plans to eliminate war leaderships such as Kim Jong Il and paralyze warfare command facilities in case of emergency.”

The new initiative by Special Forces would target North Korean core facilities as well.

As part of the operation, South Korea’s forces would launch Taurus cruise missiles from F-15 fighters, which would be able to strike all key facilities in Pyongyang and can also strike the office of the Chairman of the Labor Party, Kim Jong Eun, at the Pyongyang Labor Party headquarters.”

As the North Koreans improve their missile capability, South Korea is making advances as well. On June 23, President Moon made a visit to military installations in the field. He reviewed how the Hyundai-2C ballistic missile is being evaluated to have an improved accuracy rate. South Korea is undertaking a full review of its stock of ballistic and cruise missiles to determine future needs.

Negotiations also are underway with the United States regarding ROK-US Missile Guidelines to improve the deterrence capability of the Republic of Korea. The talks center on increasing the destructive power of the warheads housed on the various missiles.

Increasing the weight of warheads carried by cruise and ballistic missiles will enhance the ability to penetrate underground concrete bunkers in the North Korean regime.

Defense experts also are speculating about U.S. plans for a surgical strike against the North Koreans. Given the heightened South Korean preparations, the possibility of a joint ROK-US strike must be considered as well.

At the same time, those experts have concerns about the North initiating a strike of its own pre-emptively.

Certainly, China has become the most interested observer, knowing that an outbreak of armed hostilities on the Korean peninsula will have serious consequences for them as well.
