Jabril is a Palestinian-American born in Dearborn, Michigan, where he's still based. He holds a degree in Islamic law from Saudi Arabia.
The London attacker’s friend claims the terrorist was a close adherent to Jabril’s messages of hatred and violence.
He used to listen to a lot of Musa Jibril. I have heard some of this stuff and its very radical. I am surprised this stuff is still on YouTube and is easily accessible. I phoned the anti-terror hotline. I spoke to the gentleman. I told him about our conversation and why I think he was radicalised,” the friend told BBCNews.
The impact Jabril has on Muslim youth should come as no surprise to authorities in Great Britain and the United States. A 2014 study by the Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence reported that Jabril’s Facebook page was the most popular among European and North American jihadists fighting for the Islamic State (ISIS).
A spokesman for the Centre noted that Jabril “provides the political and theological justification” to jihadists.
In 2005, Jabril and his father were convicted in federal court on 42 counts of bank fraud, conspiracy and money laundering in connection with the purchase of 13 homes and two apartment buildings in the greater Detroit area.
During the trial it was noted that Jabril’s website encouraged Muslim youth to hate and kill non-Muslims, encouraging the spread of Islam through waging a holy war. He was released from prison in 2012 and prohibited from putting new material on social media in 2015 after being charged with a parole violation.
Jabril’s existing material can still be found on his website and videos on YouTube to inspire new jihadis and support ISIS. As a result, innocent people remain at great risk because authorities have grossly failed to act to get the content removed or to arrest those suspected as potential jihadists.
Last Saturday, the attacker and two accomplices plowed a van into a crowd on London Bridge, and then leapt out of the van to stab bystanders before police could arrive and shoot them.
