Pope Francis: Trump’s ‘Populism is Evil’

Pope Francis was once seen as an incredibly popular — if controversial — pope. Now, he is recognized more for his incredibly divisive and inflammatory political rhetoric. Unsurprisingly, most of those comments have been aimed at U.S. President Donald Trump.

Thhe pope made another veiled warning about Trump. This time, it was Trump’s populist worldview that came under attack:

Pope Francis has warned in an interview with a German newspaper of the dangers of rising populism in western democracies.

The pope told Die Zeit on Thursday “populism is evil and ends badly as the past century showed.”

But the pope may not be as politically influential as one might think. Despite his anti-Trump campaign, Trump won the Christian vote definitively. So the pope may be influential in the realm of religion, but his followers don’t’ seem to care for his politics quite as much.
