You are referring to the inqisition. the problem was, Spain just spent 700 years fighting to free themselves from Islamic tyrranny. and there were many false converts from Islam in the government and the Church. With Islam just acrross from Giralter, and always trying to expand, the false converts were a threat to the state. the inqisition only applied to people claining to be Catholic. And only false conversts convicted twice were turned over to the state. and the state usually killed them as liars and threats to the state. a bit barbaric by our standards, but understandable due to the constant threat of Islamic invasion. and quite merciful compared to England where the death penaolty could be handed down for panhandling. Christians are not perfect. and courts of men are not perfect. But the miniscule nuimber of LIARS who were dispatched because of the inquisition is nothing compared to the hundreds of thousand and even million killed in each nation Islam took by the sword.
