He is NOT right.
He doesn’t say anything about the cross being a failure. The first half of the sentence makes it clear what he was speaking about. To many people, Jesus’ HUMAN life ended in failure. And it would seem that way if Jesus were only human. But He’s not. He is also God. And so God took this seeming failure, and turned it into victory. This is much ado about nothing. Words do matter, but the intent behind those words is just as important.
