Pope Francis’ Address to Congress Will Challenge Lawmakers

As we all know, the two sides of the American political landscape, Democrats and Republicans, hardly ever agree on anything. Non-Catholics and Catholics alike can agree with at least one thing Pope Francis’ speaks to. As a religious leader, of one of the largest denominations of Christianity the pope has influence over everyone including the U.S. Congress.

The pope thrills Democrats with his teachings on climate change, social justice and immigration. At the same time, his message on life and the Catholic Church’s traditional opposition to abortion comfort Republicans.

The pope comes to the Capitol on Sept. 24, where he will be the first pontiff to ever address a joint meeting of Congress. He will also appear on a West Front balcony to greet the public.

As the pope prepares for his trip to the United States to speak to Congress we as a people are preparing as well. Expectations for both sides of the spectrum, Democratic Catholics and Republican Catholics are high as they wait to welcome their beloved Pope Francis’.
