Up until this Wednesday evening, Berkeley police investigators had declined to confirm if they were searching for Clanton, despite the controversy sparked by the revelation that online researchers had confirmed his identity. Those injured and their supporters were clamoring for his arrest.

Later that evening, Berkeley officers took him into custody at 12:15 p.m. after locating him in Oakland. Online records at the Alameda County sheriff’s office confirm he is being held at the Berkeley jail.

Ironically, some of Clanton’s academic work centered on issues within the prison system. Now, he may be able to access more research first hand.

His work in political philosophy also centers on mass incarceration and the prison system,” Clanton’s former faculty page read. “He is currently exploring restorative justice from an anti-authoritarian perspective.”

Eric also teaches courses on ethics and critical thinking, both of which he’s seemingly abandoned.

Police confirm they’ve identified three victims in the case, all of whom were struck in the head or neck with a bike lock.

Berkeley Police Captain Ed Spiller claimed that Clanton was tracked down at a location in Oakland, California, before adding that he found the video footage from the incident “shocking.”

Spiller said that Berkeley Police are still asking people with information to come forward. He noted more work is being done to bolster the case against Clanton.
