The Democrats just never get tired of trying to promote gun control to gun owners and failing miserably. Of course, this is because many of them simply can’t relate to them, as was made painfully apparent this weekend.
Speaking at the NBC/Youtube Democratic debate on Sunday, former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley defended his position on gun control by touting his relationship with gun owners. Attempting to defend his anti-Second Amendment record, O’Malley claimed that he’s, “never met a self-respecting deer hunter that needed an AR-15 to down a deer.”
Setting aside the unlikelihood of his claim that he regularly fraternizes with gun owners and deer hunters, O’Malley’s statement is stupefying. Yes, maybe deer hunters don’t need AR-15’s to shoot deer, but have you considered the possibility that maybe, just maybe, they need them to defend themselves?
To be fair, O’Malley, with his well-trained security escorts, probably doesn’t understand why anybody would need an AR-15 to protect themselves and their family. It should, however, keep him from opening his mouth on topics that he has little understanding of.

Idiot. I hunt with one every year.
Just another communist that plays in his own feces.
And I have never met a self respecting politician that deserved his pay.
Michael McCarty I realize you’re on the pro gun side as I am so I don’t want to be too hard on you but the AR 15 is rarely used for hunting and for many reasons. First the majority of states have bullet capacity limits and don’t allow semiautomatic for big game. The .223 caliber is borderline too small for even a white tail deer. That caliber is also effected by wind and gets easily misdirected by a small amount of brush because it is such a small mass and fast velocity round. The few that do use them for hunting is mostly for varmint type animals such as coyotes and feral hogs. I have them, I love them, but to be honest they are more of a paper and water jug gun than anything else. They look cool and they have thousands of ways to upgrade and personalize them. There is no reason to ban them.
The real most popular hunting gun is a bolt action type gun. Something like a remington model 700 Springfield in a 30-06 or a 300 wsm.
.223 or 5.56 is borderline too small for a deer. Nelson Miller first off, those guns don’t take out men with a single shot unless very well placed. Also deer are alot tougher than humans. It is amazing at what a deer can do. When I was younger I shot a deer with a 30-06 and missed the kill zone low and forward. It knocked one of his front legs off. The deer tumbled and jumped back up running and instinctively knew how to run one 3 legs. A 22lr or a 17hmr will kill a deer, but very few hunters use a caliber as small as a 223 because the quick kill potential isn’t there and it’s inhumane. Many states have laws against it as well.
Robert Owen is right folks. What .223 means is .223 inches. A .300 is .300 inches diameter bullet. A .22 LR is .22. And Eric Stoops they do make a few other caliber options for the AR 15 but 223/5.56 is by far the most commonly associated with it and accounts for easily 95 percent of the AR 15 s made.
5.56 means 5.56 millimeters
Daniel Coneybeer Thanks for your correction, I have shot .223 since back in 68 with Uncle Sam. I have seen it used and m,isused on several animals and am pretty well knowledgeable on its capabilities. I mostly regard the round as near useless except for target use, but that is just my opinion. What a person chooses to use for hunting deer is their personal choice of course, but Mr. O”malley is simply one of many jerks who equate round capacity with mayhem which is of course not the case at all. As usual, the game is to down the use of semi-autos for hunting and to create a mindset that all hunters are reckless idiots which you and I both know is totally foolish. Here in Texas the AR platform is fairly popular but old folks such as myself find it hard to change styles to the Mattie Mattel and its obnoxious popping and rattling. Have never been a fan, but to each his own.
