The request for a FISA warrant to carry out surveillance on Page would require the FBI to show “probable cause” that Page was acting as “an agent of a foreign power.”

As far back as last July, the FBI began investigating to see if the Russian government was trying to influence the presidential election.

A former Merrill Lynch investment banker in Moscow, Page was part of a volunteer group of foreign policy advisers to the Trump campaign. Although some media reports have tried to make it appear that Page was heavily involved, Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks stressed that his role was “informal” and that he was not a key adviser.

The Washington Post has cited “U.S. officials” as its sources for the recent report.

Page has not been accused of any crimes, and it is unclear whether the Justice Department might later seek charges against him or others in connection with Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election.”

The counterintelligence investigation into Russian efforts to influence U.S. elections began in July, officials have said. Most such investigations don’t result in criminal charges.”

The FBI, the Justice Department and the White House have declined comment on the most recent report.

Page has labeled the FBI investigation as “politically motivated government surveillance.”

Democrat Congressman Adam Schiff, minority chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has cited an unverified British intelligence dossier as evidence of the need to investigate Page.   The dossier claims that Page met with Russian operative Igor Sechin, who serves a chief executive of the Rosneft energy firm.

Page denies any meeting with Sechin and termed the British intelligence report a “dodgy dossier.”

While Democrats and supportive media have tried to portray Page as a key foreign policy adviser to candidate Trump, the fact remains the two men never met face to face.

Page served as part of a volunteer group that met over three dinners in the spring and summer of 2016. Page did provide policy memos to the campaign.

FISA requests need show no evidence of a crime and are granted for a 90-day period, which can be renewed if the FBI asks for more time to surveil and investigate. It’s believed that the Page warrant may have been renewed more than once.

In March, President Trump tweeted about the Obama Administration surveillance of his campaign.  At the time, he was severely criticized for the allegation.   This latest report would seem to confirm how right he was.
