52% of all ACA customers will be forced to payback an average of $530 received in subsidies when they file taxes this year, representing a 17% decrease in the typical tax refund.
The problem is that ACA subsidies are based on total income for the entire year and most, lacking crystal ball, can’t accurately predict changes to subsidy qualifications that occur in the future, like a promotion or change in family size, that affects how much subsidy they will receive.
