Obama: Sports Teams Should Drop Native American Mascots

Barack Obama said at a White House Tribal Nations Conference that sports team names help to perpetuate racism in America.

Speaking at the White House Tribal Nations Conference, Obama said it’s important to “break stereotypes, I believe that includes our sports teams.”

“If you’re living in a society that devalues your culture or perpetuates stereotypes, you may be devaluing yourself,” Obama added. “We all need to do more to ensure that our young people feel supported and respected.”

“If you walk into a school and you’re already feeling that stereotypes are embedded in the culture and the cheers, that kid is feeling set apart and different,” he said.

At the professional level, the president has in the past suggested he supports changing the Redskins’ name, which has been embroiled in controversy for years. He said he would be open to a name change in a 2013 interview.

And so what Adidas has done is it said to the 2,000-plus schools that still have native American or Alaska native mascots, and said, you know what? We will work with you to redesign your entire sports brand. And I don’t know if Adidas made the same offer to a certain NFL team here in Washington, but they might want to think about that as well. But, I tell you for Adidas to make that commitment that’s a very smart thing to do because those schools now don’t have an excuse.

What they are saying is one of the top sports companies in the world, one of the top brands in the world, is prepared to come in and use all their expertise to come up with something that’s going to work and the entire community can feel proud of and can bring people together and give a fresh start. And I really want to give them a lot of credit for taking that step.

Obama will always give a pat on the head to anyone who helps him carry out his agenda. You can’t argue the point with liberals, the issue is so niche and frankly absurd that to raise any objection to the pressure to change benign sports team names immediately makes you a racist.

Liking the “Redskins” must mean you supported the Trail Of Tears and the eradication of Native Americans as well. The issues faced by Native Americans in this country are more universal than anyone is willing to acknowledge because it doesn’t jive with what Americans perceive to be Native American issues.

Instead of focusing on rampant meth and heroine use, alcoholism, organized crime, or corrupt casinos, it’s easier to lay back, ignore those issues and make a fuss over the name of a sports team. It’s easier to market to slow-thinking liberals, and it’s guaranteed to be another superficial issue in the upcoming election. Better to go outside and play ball.
