While the Pope isn’t here to address the issues that are currently dividing America, in his comments at the White House, he seems to be well aware of them. His subtle disapproval of the way our president is currently handling this country didn’t go unnoticed.
Pope Francis also addressed the topic in his remarks, noting his concerns about its status in the United States. He said that while “American Catholics are committed to building a society which is truly tolerant and inclusive,” they are also committed “to safeguarding their rights.” Diversity must be balanced with respect for religious persons’ “deepest concerns” and “their right to religious liberty,” he said.
Additionally, Breitbart reports: “In a veiled reference to the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage in the United States, the Pope said he would travel to Philadelphia ‘to celebrate and support the institutions of marriage and the family at this, a critical moment in the history of our civilization.’”
Earlier this month, the Obama administration was not sympathetic to Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis when she sought a religious accommodation to enable her not to violate her conscience by signing same-sex marriage certificates.
There’s no doubt that this is the most progressive pope the world has seen in a long time, but it looks like he doesn’t lean as far to the left when it comes to religious matters. Maybe Pope Francis’s time in America will bring a few liberals to the light . . . or maybe that’s wishful thinking. Either way, the issue of religious freedom is one that the Obama Administration needs to stop lying about and ignoring.
