Obama Celebrated Columbus Day by Blaming the White Man

School children chant, “In fourteen-ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue”, and Obama says,

“Previously unseen disease, devastation and violence were introduced to their lives — and as we pay tribute to the ways in which Columbus pursued ambitious goals — we also recognize the suffering inflicted upon Native Americans and we recommit to strengthening tribal sovereignty and maintaining our strong ties,” reads the president’s Columbus Day proclamation.

“Though these early travels expanded the realm of European exploration, to many they also marked a time that forever changed the world for the indigenous peoples of North America.”

So, the message really is, that there was no sickness before Columbus came.  There was no violence between native tribes. Europeans and Columbus brought all of that to bear when they came to the new world.

There seems to be no celebration over what was indeed a great discovery and a tremendous voyage.  Despite “violence and disease”, all indigenous peoples of South and North America have reaped the benefits of modernity.
