North Korea Sets Deadline for Attack on Guam

North Korea’s state-run news agency KCNA released a statement indicating the military would finalize its plan for missile launches near Guam by the middle of August.

The plan would be on hold until given the go-ahead by Kim Jong-un. It’s believed it would involve firing four intermediate-range missiles into the sea about 18-25 miles off the coast of Guam.

On Wednesday, Pyongyang’s military said Trump “let out a load of nonsense about ‘fire and fury,'” adding that “sound dialogue is not possible with such a guy bereft of reason and only absolute force can work on him.”

Secretary Mattis responded on behalf of the administration to dissuade the North Koreans from any imprudent actions.

The DPRK must choose to stop isolating itself and stand down its pursuit of nuclear weapons,” Mattis said. “The DPRK should cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people.”

Standing up for President Trump’s comments earlier in the week, Secretary Tillerson made clear what was intended.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Wednesday sought to clarify that the president “is sending a strong message to North Korea in language that Kim Jong Un would understand, because he doesn’t seem to understand diplomatic language.”

While Democrats and Republicans criticized the president’s comments, the news media continued to pile on as well. Relying as usual on unnamed sources, the New York Times reported that President Trump had not consulted with advisors before making his tough statement.

Its source was “several people with direct knowledge of what unfolded.” Right.

Even though the whimpering political class and fake news media will not stand up with the president to show a unified front against a tyrannical dictator who poses a threat to the entire world, one key ally has stepped forward to pledge its support.

Japan’s defense minister said his country would endeavor to shoot down the North Korean missiles if an attack toward Guam is launched.

In such a scenario, Japan has the right to activate its Aegis destroyer missile defense system, Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said during a session of the National Diet, Japan’s parliament. Any attack against Guam would be considered an existential threat to Japan, the defense minister said, also citing a mutual defense agreement with the United States.

It’s nice to know the president has friends in Tokyo, maybe more so than he might in Washington, D.C.
