NFL Player Explains Why He Returned Sons’ Trophies


The presentation of participation trophies has been a hot topic in recent years. In a post on Instagram, James Harrison respectfully gave his thoughts on the idea, and returned the trophies his boys were given, saying that they needed to earn them.

NFL football player James Harrison said in a message posted to Instagram he returned two “participation” trophies awarded to his two sons. Harrison said the trophies would be returned until they earned “a real trophy.”

“I’m not about to raise two boys to be men by making them believe they are entitled to something just because they tried their best,” wrote Harrison

Harrison has a good point. Modern politics have created a society where people think they’re entitled to things for the simple act of being alive. Anybody who’s ever played a sport as a child or adult, knows what it’s like to lose and then watch the winning team get a trophy. It doesn’t feel great. However, the feeling of satisfaction you get from putting the effort in and winning the following season makes it all worth while. But if everybody’s winning, what’s the point?
